Thinking Skills

Education is not just learning knowledge and skills, but the development of children’s learning capacity. Education is the development of thinking clearly and creatively, implementing their own plans and communicating their ideas to others in a variety of ways.’ (Sue Palmer and Galina Doyle, 2004)

Thinking is a complex process that involves a variety of skills that are often used together when confronted with a new and interesting situation. Sharing the process of thinking with a child in meaningful and playful situations supports the development of thinking skills. It is also a fantastic opportunity for an adult to become more aware of children’s understanding and knowledge of the world, how they make sense of what is happening around them, how they communicate their thoughts and what they can do with the ideas in their minds.

Thinking skills are about how knowledge is acquired and how to use this knowledge. They include an element of knowing about thinking called ‘metacognition’. Metacognition is the knowledge of your own thinking process, evidenced by planning an approach to a learning task, monitoring your understanding and evaluating the whole process to completion. Being motivated to continue with the task, however difficult it is, is part of metacognition too.

Thinking skills are related to encouraging children to learn to think for themselves, learning through real situations in a highly motivating environment. The thinking skills which constitute the generic term ‘critical thinking’ are enquiry, information processing, reasoning, evaluation, problem-solving and creative thinking (see box below). Being aware of these different thinking skills enables adults to provide safe, creative environments and play situations where thinking can be sustained.

“Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam”--- --- --- “this entire earth is my family.”

 Ordinary man loved and respected Nature. The sun. the moon, the earth were all gods. Sounds primitive, no? But think of it. The concept is definitely wiser now that we stand on the brink of losing our earth forever if we do not wake up .  Think at least once before switching on your ACs, using detergent powders,cutting off trees,tearing off papers insanely…………..and well you know the list is so long.
Let us come together. We indeed are one family.

Let us join hands for this beautiful earth – our home.

Plant a tree to save life

We have the moral responsibility to bequeath to our
children a world which is safe, clean and productive,
a world which should continue to inspire
the human imagination with the immensity of
the blue ocean, the loftiness of snow-covered mountains,
the green expanse of extensive forests and the
silver streams of ancient rivers.
Our people have a right to economic and social development
and to discard the ignominy of widespread poverty.
For this we need rapid economic growth. But I also believe
that ecologically sustainable development need not be in
contradiction to achieving our growth objectives.
In fact, we must have a broader perspective on
development. It must include the quality of life,
not merely the quantitative accretion of goods and services.
Our people want higher standards of living, but they
also want clean water to drink, fresh air to breathe and
a green earth to walk on.

Immune System

Your immune system is your body’s natural defense against diseases. Its functions range from fighting off harmful bacteria and viruses to destroying potentially cancerous cells. However, our immune systems are under attack in our daily lives from a variety of sources such as free radicals in the body, bacteria, UV radiation, environmental pollutants, and stress.
1.  Eat a healthy diet. Mindfully include immune-boosting foods to everyday meals.
2.  Exercise and be physically active, from all-body workouts, running, walking, and dancing to gardening. The key is to keep moving.
3.  Cultivate a new hobby that’s physically demanding, makes your heart beat faster, and your blood circulate better. As a result, you’ll become more fit.
4.  Practice quietness. A quiet mind may promote inner peace and relaxation.
5.  Take a hot bath or shower. Soaking in a warm bath is another way of relaxation.
6.  Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep or sleep deprivation can impair immune system function.
7.  Reduce stress. Everybody gets stress from different areas of life. There can be a long list of stress management tips, but not all work for everyone. Have fun discovering and developing whatever works for you.
8.  Be kind. According to a good friend of mine who is an experienced oncologist, my dad’s prolonged life was certainly attributed to his extraordinary kindness, which made this doctor want to learn more about my dad’s kindness.
9.  Appreciate the “little things” in life and always maintain a positive and grateful attitude. Research found that individuals who have a negative frame of mind have difficulty properly recruiting their immune response and thereby pose a higher risk for illness compared with those with a positive attitude.
10.  Get outdoors. Whether you walk, ski, bike or hike, the combination of enjoying the beauty of nature and a dose of exercise boosts the immune system.
11.  Maintain a clutter-free home and workplace, because clutter is a stress-trigger. Clear those mental clutters, too.
12.  Laugh and smile often. Laughter boosts your immune system at no cost. The more folks laugh, the less depression they experience. If you have any difficulty laughing, seek “Laughter Yoga”, by checking out a local group that practices it.

Believe in yourself

Remember: If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will either.
Tip: If you find yourself feeling less than positive, make a conscious effort to claim your space, move with purpose and free your natural voice. By doing so your self-belief will rise.
Technical: Research clearly shows that positive self-belief improves performance both intellectually and physically
Caution: Don’t allow temporary setbacks to trigger you into negative beliefs. Part of the power of positive belief lies in the determination it fuels in the face of adversity.

MEDITATION AS A THERAPY

Meditation has not only been used as an important therapy for psychological and nervous disorders, from simple insomnia to severe emotional disturbances, but lately physicians have also prescribed it for curing various physical ailments as well. It is useful in chronic and debilitating diseases like allergies or arthritis, in which stress or hypersensitivity of the nervous system are involved. Regularmeditation practices have also been known to help in dealing with pain and a number of painful diseases, whether chronic or acute. The act of meditation comes in useful because it helps the mind to detach itself from all material and physical attachments—and that is the ultimate cure for all diseases or at least the way to transcend them when we cannot avoid them.

Research has found meditation, especially Transcendental Meditation, to be extremely successful in treating physiological problems. Research on Transcendental Meditation has been conducted at more than 200 universities, hospitals, and research institutions in 27 countries. As a result, more than 500 research and review papers have been written covering a wide variety of physiological, psychological, and sociological effects.

Transcendental Meditation allows mental activity to settle down in a natural way while alertness is maintained and enhanced. Following Transcendental Meditation, individuals have reported feeling refreshed physically as well as mentally. The mind has become calmer and more alert, thinking clearer, and energy levels have increased. Those with busy schedules have noted that Transcendental Meditation brings increased efficiency in activity; time is used more effectively. When mental and physical well being are enhanced, personal relationships also improve, a commonly reported and valued benefit of Transcendental Meditation.

Physiological research has shown that Transcendental Meditation gives rise to a state of deep rest characterized by marked reductions in metabolic activity, increased orderliness and integration of brain functioning, increased cerebral blood flow and features directly opposite to the physiological and biochemical effects of stress. Taken together, these studies clearly distinguish the physiology of Transcendental Meditation from sleep or simple relaxation.

A review of research on behavioral therapy for hypertension concluded that Transcendental Meditationprovides an optimal non-clinical treatment and preventive program for high blood pressure because the technique:

• produces rapid, clinically significant blood pressure reductions;
• is distinctly more effective than other meditation and relaxation procedures;
• is continued by a high proportion of subjects (in contrast to lower continuation rates for relaxation techniques and the frequent problem of poor compliance with anti-hypertensive drugs);
• has documented acceptability and effectiveness in a wide range of populations;
• is effective in reducing high blood pressure both when used as sole treatment and when used in concert with medication;
• reduces high blood pressure in `real life` environments outside the clinic;
• is free from harmful side-effects or adverse reactions;
• reduces other cardiovascular risk factors and improves health in a general way.

However, all forms of meditation are not good for everyone, any more than all foods or herbs are. For this reason both yoga and ayurveda recommends a proper lifestyle and an integral approach tomeditation that considers both our different faculties as well as our individual nature.

"Happiness is a journey, not a destination; The time for happiness is today not tomorrow."

"Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence." ~ Aristotle
"Joy has nothing to do with material things, or with man's outward circumstance...A man living in the lap of luxury can be wretched, and a man in the depths of poverty can overflow with joy." ~ William Barclay

Lower Back Pain Relief Tips

Lower Back Pain Relief Tips

Now you can get lower back pain relief simply by doing a couple of easy to do exercises. I first noticing my lower back pain when I was on a bowling team. I'd been bowling semi pro for a number of years and was trying to decide if I wanted to make a full time career out of it. But then, at one match it felt like I pulled a muscle or something in my lumbar area. Here's how I took care of it.

Lower back pain is a common infliction that affects over 80% of the adult population at one time or another in their lifetime. There are also many causes, and it can be difficult to directly determine the source of the problem without medical intervention, ie. a visit to the doctor or chiropractor.

Some of the more usual causes are likely to be undertaking physical activity in which the body is not used to, such as strenuous gardening or lifting of overly heavy objects.

This over-exertion can result in a slipped disk (or a herniated disk). This is a result of twisting, generally while lifting. A slipped disk sounds worse than it probably is. It is merely the occurrence of your spinal bone bulging slightly, and touching on some nerves. Some basic exercises can help to relieve the pain and rectify the slipped disk issue.

Tip 1: Lie on Your Back.

Now this may sound simple (and it is!) but it is also highly effective. Lie flat on the floor, with some pillows placed under your head and knees for support. This takes the strain away from your lower back. An alternative is to place a pillow on a chair seat, and rest your feet on the chair, with your back on the floor.

It is recommended to stay in this position for around 5-25 minutes each session.

This is a great way of resting the back and relieving the pressure off your lower back. You should perform this exercise for no more than 1 to 2 days in a row, getting up and walking around every hour.

Tip 2: Use Heating Pads and/or Ice Packs

Heated pads will help to relieve muscle spasm. Use these for 20-30 mins at a time. Ice packs are also a suitable alternative.

Tip 3: Medicines to Reduce Swelling

Some medications that assist in reducing swelling are Aspirin and Entrophen. Panadol is also helpful in controlling minor pain while you rest your lower back and recuperate.

Tip 4: Massage for Muscle Relief

Massaging the lower back can help to reduce any inflammation and swelling. And as the muscles relax, circulation is increased and pain often lessens.

If these tips are combined, together with much needed bed rest, your back pain should be gone and your back should be returned to its old self.

At this point you may consider practicing some back strengthening exercises, to prevent any future re-occurrence of lower back pain. We will discuss some prevention tips in future articles.

Important note: If the lower back pain is persistent for 2-3 weeks, you should consult your family doctor. There is no substitute for professional medical advice.

What really remains in life

“The right to be heard, doesn’t include the right to be taken seriously”
No matter how much or for how long people talk, what really matters is the value of what you are saying. No matter how many people read what you are writing, how many people listen to your songs. What really remains in life is the value you put in . No matter how much money one makes, what really matters is how passionate he\she is about their career. Bill Gates gave up a great part of his money, yet his value has increased. Others have more money,yet the status diminshes. It is not how much we have, it is how happy we are about what we are doing. Mother Teresa owned nothing, however, she is still living in people’s heart. Her message is still spreading.
Great art lives regardless of the immediate success or failure, great art is about time, and it always stands the test of time. Great artists always have passion for art, not for money.

Some people have the power and the position to speak to the public and  send messages, yet history remembers very few. The few that really believed in man’s power to change the world for the better. Great messages live for ever. It is the power of beauty that remains for ever. The same applies to us, it is the value in our lives that remain, not the possession or the fancy life. It is how positive we can be, how effective the mission is. Every single act of kindess and love is what makes up our history. It is a building we are building everyday, till we get at a certain point at a certain age, and look back with such contentment and say, my journy has been so meaningful.http://youthpowersindia.blogspot.com

Choose how to live.

 Deep search is our journey in life, that makes our life a beautiful ride.

Confusion is one step forward to reach the truth. And truth is relative. This truth is your truth, the one that you truly have worked hard to get to and once you get there you feel tremendously happy and satisfied.

Confusion is negative when it is only a state of mind. If nothing is happening in our life, and the person is just confused. The one who doesn’t work really hard in order to change reality will definitely blame other external factors on his failures. Hard work is always needed to change this state of mental confusion.  Work is a state of action, that where the confusion may change into clarity. Whether one works to clarify the ambiguity or to just take an action, so take an action never ever stand still for this will take you nowhere.

Hard work does need academic as well as practical side in order to verify any given information. You can’t verify any given information by brooding over it. Action is always must.

NEW INDIA

"Karmany evadhikaraste,
Ma phaleshu kadacana,
Ma karma phala hetur bhur,
Ma te sango stv akarmani. "

Confidence: All of us have potentials to achieve great things in life, but most of us are not motivated or optimistic enough to spur ourselves on over our lifetime to fulfill our life goals to make this world a better place. Be that someone who will enable others to see the positive side of things, that someone who tells stories of inspiration to others, that someone who lets others know of perseverance and determination. As you go about encouraging others, you will feel encouraged too.http://youthpowersindia.blogspot.com
